Curious about the construction on I-84?

While planning and preliminary design are progressing on the I-84 Hartford Project, the conditions of the existing bridges carrying I-84 and its ramps in the study area continue to deteriorate. Since 2004, CTDOT has spent approximately $60 million for repairs to the bridges. In addition, the Department expects to spend another $70 million over the next few years to ensure that the bridges to ensure that the structures remain in a state of good repair.

Rehabilitation work began in early April 2017 to perform repairs to sections of I-84 and many of its eastbound and westbound ramps. Approximate project limits include the viaduct eastbound and westbound between Exit 46 and Exit 49. The rehabilitation work will include superstructure repairs, substructure repairs, bearing replacements, field painting, median replacement, parapet modifications, joint replacements, and replacement of light standards. Also included is partial reconstruction, milling and pavement overlay.

There will be some ramp closures during the rehabilitation work. Ramp closures will occur during off-peak overnight hours, and ramps will be opened to traffic each morning. CTDOT has recently awarded a contract to the Middlesex Corporation of Littleton, Massachusetts to rehabilitate the bridges. The work will continue through two construction seasons:

  • 1. April - November 2017
  • 2. April - November 2018

This work is not part of the I-84 Hartford Project, but it is necessary to keep the bridges in a safe operating condition until a permanent reconstruction solution is implemented through the I-84 Hartford Project. See the I-84 Hartford project schedule.
