Evaluating the Alternatives.

Mainline Alternatives and Interchange Options

This interactive webpage is a tool to help you understand the large number of combinations of mainline alternatives and interchange options that are currently under consideration for I-84 in Hartford. Our challenge is to evaluate each of these combinations in terms of how they impact traffic, businesses, communities, and the environment. We are looking for your assistance to do this. We encourage you to review this page, provide input, and ask plenty of questions.

As the project and the alternatives evolve, this page will be updated to highlight our latest work.

How To Use This Page

  • 2. View the options by clicking on the View as Tiles / View as List button on the right side of the screen below.
  • 3. Filter the Options to view only ones that you desire to see (e.g. eastern, western, tunnel, lowered, etc).
  • 4. Click the thumbs-up or thumbs-down to state your preference on each option.
  • 5. Send us your comments by clicking on Explore and Comment under each of the alternatives/options.

About the Naming of the Alternatives / Options:

  • The mainline alternatives (2, 3, or 4) each have several options (A, B, or C) that describe whether the option: uses the existing footprint of I-84 (A), shifts a little to the north (B) of the existing footprint, or shifts a little to the south (C) of the existing footprint.
  • Each option is defined as part of the eastern portion of the corridor (E) or the western portion of the corridor (W).
  • Some options are further defined with an (S) indicating that they include an interchange at Sigourney Street.
  • For example:
  • Example 1: Alternative 2/3 W5 is the western interchange option #5 for the mainline alternatives 2 and 3 (i.e. elevated and lowered alternatives).
  • Example 2: Alternative 2A E3(S) is the eastern interchange option #3 for the mainline alternative 2A (i.e. elevated alternative slightly north of the existing highway alignment). This option includes ramps at Sigourney Street.

The slight variations in alignment can be seen here, along with the dividing line between the east and west sections of the project.
